A day at Ft. Mifflin

So, I'm seeing all tweets about cheap things to do in the Philly area with your family. However, none of them are really cheap.  One place my family did visit Ft. Mifflin. Now I had seen it on my ghost shows and there was a paranormal group coming in as we left, but you don't need to look for ghosties at this place to have fun.  If you haven't been there it is a great historical site right by the Philly airport. Not only that, but you get the benefit of the planes taking off and landing and my boys just loved it.   The cost is only $6 for adults, $5 for kids 6-12 and under 6 is free! Plus you can bring a picnic and eat right on the premises. So much fun and a little bit of history.  Visit their site http://fortmifflin.us/

Dutch Market

Saturday...the day I take the boys to the Dutch Market.  There are many different Dutch markets in New Jersey and Pennsylvania but the one I love is on Rt. 70 in Medford.  It's not large, but they have a great selection of meats, salads, cheeses, baked goods and ice cream. Mmmmm!  The best part are the pretzel dogs and pretzels. They drench them in butter but nothing beats the taste.  They have cinnamon and sugar pretzels, sour cream and onion pretzels (yum!) and the famous hot dogs; hot dogs wrapped in American cheese and pretzel. Can't be beat!   I have attempted to make pretzels at home but not very successfully.  It's just as easy to go to the Dutch market.   Support local businesses!

Quick update-cupcakes cooling...we shall see...
So, I went to the supermarket to get "non" Passover items.   Took Sammy with me. Whenever I take one of the boys there is no point to a list.  I needed four items and walked away with probably twenty, including two hula hoops which were next to the checkout.  Now, I know how to say no, but when you've been eating nothing but matzoh for seven days. Everything look appetizing. Including these two items.

So, I will attempt to bake the "Fun da-middles" and see how that goes. But Sam insisted on the Duncan Hines frosting creations. I am not a big fan of canned frosting. I don't buy it. However, for 99 cents at Shop Rite I thought I'd try this in my own frosting.

Anyone out there use this stuff?  Were the cupcakes as "fun" as they appear?  Hmmm....we shall see in about 45 minutes.   Stay tuned!

A turn of events.

As I continue my spring break stuck home with a somewhat sick child now, I thought it best to visit ThredUP.com and post some clothes that no longer fit my son.  To my surprise, they have changed their whole concept. Not sure if I'll like it or not. Now you no longer post boxes of slightly worn clothing, but you send the clothes to them and they sell them and you make a commission. Not only that but there are some labels that they won't take (such as Target). Really?   I ordered a bag to send my clothes. However, I could tell by the site that I wasn't too impressed. They didn't have a large selection for my size 12 son, and I thought they were a little pricey. You can get real deals at The Children's Place outlet in the Franklin Mills Mall in Philly (as well as Old Navy outlet, Gap, and others) for the same prices and the clothes are new!  So, I will wait for my bag to come and then post the clothes and see what happens.

Spring Break

I joined Twitter so that I could find deals and steals for my kids. What I found were a lot of great blogs by other moms. But most of them had babies and toddlers. What about moms like me? I have two boys, 7 and 10.  I thought to myself, "Hey, I can do this." But, again I procrastinated.  So, today is the first day of my blog.  What I'd like this blog to do is offer inexpensive ideas of things to do with the kids. I am constantly on the lookout for free or really cheap ideas.   My boys have simple taste. As you can see from the photo, a couple of lawn bags offer a great deal of fun.

So, with this blog I would like to offer recipes, craft ideas and other fun things to do that you can do with the older kids.   I promise other exciting ideas coming up.... If you have any interesting ideas please post!
